ASSAULT IN HOTEL

LICENSEE INJURED. ACCUSED’S WIFE IN ROOM. POLICE FIND BROKEN CLUB. (By Telegraph.—PreiS Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. For assaulting Joseph Henry Winter, formerly licensee of the Waverley 'Hotel, a fine of £lO was Imposed on Ernest Munro by Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., In the Police Court to-day. The police said an inquiry agent booked a room at the hotel and later, accompanied by another inquiry agent and Munro, went along a Are escape to the window outside Winter's room. Munro raised the window and jumped into the darkened room. One Inquiry agent shone a torch on Winter while Munro assaulted him. Mrs Munro, who was in the room, switched on the light and Munro and Winter moved into the oorridor. Later a housekeeper called at Winter's room and found him in a dazed condition and suffering from severe injuries. The police found an Indian Club broken in two pieces. Winter ■was some weeks In hospital. Counsel for Munro said he and his ■wife had since been reconciled. Counsel for Winter said Mrs Munro was In the room for the first time, having called on business. The room was not darkened. Winter did not attack Munro first.
