OBITUARY.
MR JOHN ARKEL GILLETT. FORMER WAIKATO FOOTBALLER. The death occurred yesterday at his residence, Takapuna, Auckland, of Mr John Arkel Gillett, formerly of Hamilton, aged G 3 years. The late Mr Gillett was educated at the Hamilton East School. He was one of lhe first men to take up land on the Te Rapa Swamp where he was engaged in extracting kauri-gum from buried logs and also in Ihe milling of timber. A great deal of this material was used in Die construction of the Waihi gold mines. Eventually deceased was engaged in farming on the swamp Mr, Gillett married Miss Margaret Coates, the eldest daughter of the late Mr Isaac Coates, an early* mayor of Hamilton, and went to Auckland about 30 years ago. Well-known as a Rugby footballer in the late “nineties,” Mr Gillett was a Waikato representative and 12 times was chosen to play for Auckland. In 1899 he toured as far as Dunedin. Two years previously he played for A’i'kland against, the Wellington team when they were beaten on their ground for the first time in 20 years.
He was a brother of the 1905 All Black, Mr George Gillett, who resides in North Auckland and who formerly lived in Hamilton.
