WOMEN’S WORLD

(By “Gypsy")

FASHION FLASHES. GLIMPSES OF THE STARS. Peasant Influence. ; The peasant influence is stronglj stressed in an afternoon dress ol heavy black crepe worn by Dolores Del Rio in her forthcoming Columbia production, “The Devil’s Playground." Sleeves to the elbow are stiffly padded j at the shoulder and shirred half-way to give a piquant fullness, while u • wide black suede belt hugs the waistline and releases a full circle swing | skirt. With this frock Miss Del Rio ; wears a tiny turban of black fell ! which Is trimmed with a banding and twin bows of lipstick red grosgrain ribbon. New Ski Outfit. j Jane Wyatt, playing opposite Ronald j Colman, who is starred in Frank j Capra’s production of “Lost Horizon,” j for Columbia Studios, has just pur- | chased a brand new ski outfit of red, white and blue. Navy gabardine ski ■ trousers, a white wool shirt, a red*and ' white knitted hood that ties under i the chin, a braided red and white wool belt and red and white mittens combine to make an outfit that would dazzle any polar bear. Orchid Clips. To ornament a street frock of black i wool, in Columbia’s “When You're In Love” (formerly known as "Interlude”) Grace Moore wears a brooch fashioned of diamonds and emeralds in the motif of an orchid and clip bracelets of onyx and diamonds. The diamond clips which ornament bracelets may be removed and used separately. , Sport Clothes a Specialty. Novelty fashions do not find a place in the wardrobe of Madge Evans, who plays the leading feminine role in Bing Crosby’s Columbia production, "Pennies From Heaven.” Miss Evans’ personality is definitely reflected in the selection of her clothes. Mostly of the sport type, her costumes boast the loveliest of fabrics cut in >a simple, well-defined manner and as a final note her preferences are for crisp white trims and gay colour contrasts rather than the ornate. In her personal wardrobe Miss Evans has casual sport suits and soft wool frocks for morning shopping tours or motoring in the country. For luncheon in town or a matinee she wears a tailored suit subtly feminised by dressmaker details or an unusual colour combination. For the cocktail hour she chooses over-important black with perhaps an important clip to lend a dashing note. For evening Miss Evans chooses clear jewel tones In heavy crepe or paper taffeta. Blistered Taffeta Jacket. Among the many lovely creations purchased by Grace Moore in Paris recently, is a salmon-coloured gown of accordian-pleated chiffon, with a blistered taffeta jacket, featuring the new and involved puffed sleeves and tuxedo collar. Miss Moore is at precent working on the Columbia Picture, "When You’re in Love” (formerly known as "Interlude”) with Cary Grant as her leading man. Grace Moore plans Gown for Opera Engagement. Upon the completion of her current starring production, “When You’re in Love,” in which Cary Grant is her leading man, Grace Moore is to appear in the title role of "Manon” at the Metropoltian Opera House in New York and she has commissioned Robert Kalloch, Columbia Studios stylist, to design the featured costume for the principal aria. This gown of the Louis XVI- period is fashioned of thirty yards of lustrous white satin over petticoats of matching taffeta. The skirt is lined with pink satin which folds back in front to reveal a matching panel heavily embroidered in crystal and silver beading. Festoons of silver lace and miuia- * ture bouquets of baby pink roses anl forget-me-nots ornament the skirt and bodice and the sleeves are of silver lace ruffles. Kalloch, who first gained international fame as a designer as a result of his costumes worn by Miss Moore in “One Night of Love,” recently returned to Columbia Studios after an absence of a year and a half during which lime tie studied Parisfenne designing.
