RACES AT TE RAPA.

SUMMER MEETING. VOGUE FOR NAVY. THE NEW HATS. Glorious weather favoured the first day of the summer meeting of the Waikato Racing Club held at Te Rapa on Saturday and in the bright sunshine prevailing ensembles in the lighter materials of silks, taffeta and linen were worn by the majority of racegoers.

Navy was again the most popular colour, printed ensembles with this shade as the background being shown in many attractive colour combinations. Flowered frocks in autumn colours, deep rose and blue provided a gay note and were often worn with short coats in a predominating colour, coats in white pique or sharkskin with navy tailored frocks in contrast and linen tailored suits in pastel tones of rose beige, Jubilee blue and pink also being favoured. The vogue for talfeta was exemplified in smart tunic frocks and suits of navy, in many cases featuring the new leg o’ mutton sleeves.

The hats presented a bewildering array, the new models designed with high crowns being greatly worn. Robin Hoods finished with jaunty quills, Tyrolean peasant styles in brilliant colours and shapes resembling the witch’s hat of old were shown in attractive variations, the bonnets finished with narrow eye veils and the small brimmed hats also being much in evidence.
