BRIGHT HOCKEY

COMPETITIONS CONTINUE. •OOLTI DIFEAT KAIPAKI. WIN FOR OLD BOYS. As wm expected, a fast and exoltlng matoh was provided when Colts and Kaipaki met at hookey headquarters on Saturday, when the Killip Memorial Shield games were continued. Although Kalpaki 00-uld claim the territorial advantage throughout the matoh, their laok of finesse in the clrole robbed them of any ohances of victory. The second match. Old Boys v. Old Technicals, was hardly of a competitive nature, as the latter team was not at full strength, and had to enlist the service of several Colts players. After an exhibition of holiday hookey Old Boys proved the winners by four goals to two. No junior games were played, as the Hamilton Junior representatives had travelled to Thames. KAIPAKI UNLUCKY. DEFEAT BY COLTS. HARD AND FAST GAME. Hard and fast play characterised the match between Colts and Kaipaki, the former surprising in the second half by notching two goals that gave them the match by two goals to one. Kaipaki were unlucky in some respects, but Colts’ ability to make better use of opportunities gave them the verdict. The teams were— Kaipaki—Smillie, Goodwin, Cowley. Dunwoody. Bones. F. Boyd, Oddy, Graham, Burrows. A. Boyd, u. Boyd. Colts—McKinnon, Clark. Tipping, Jane. Clough, Badcock, Wycherley, Badeley. Perrett. McKihben. ‘Curteis. Kaipaki were first to make headway. Oddy taking the ball fast down the side and centring to Burrows, who, however, was not far enough up, and a good scoring opportunity was lost. Kaipaki continued to press, and McKinnon relieved the position at the expense of a corner. Colts attacked with Perrett heading a forward movement down the centre, hut Stnillie came far our into the circle to kick clear splendidly. The country team cleared again after Wycherley had taken the ball to the circle. Kaipaki Maintain Attack. Kaipaki maintained a willing attack, but the failure of the attacking forwards to field the accurate centring from the outside men nullified their efforts. Clough broke clear and made considerable ground, but he was neld up by F. Boyd. Colts came on, however, and brought play to the circle, where Badeley skied the ball over the net. Colts were now evening up tlie play and were making frequent incursions into Kalpakl s half. The country team

were unlucky when Bones sent a nioe centre across to Burrows, who netted smartly, but a prior infringement nullified the movement. After G. Boyd had gone near to goaling with a shot far out in the circle Wycherley put Colts on the offensive with a great effort down the side. His speed, however, prevented him from finishing off the movement in the circle. Smillie had no diffeulty in getting the ball away. Colts, however, kept play in the olrcle, and just on half-time Badeley sent the ball just outside the uprights. The second spell opened auspiciously for Kaipaki, Burrows netting after a brisk movement from the flank. The country team lost a golden opportunity when, following an advance along the right flank by Oddy and Graham, the ball went to Burrow’s, who had practically an open goal, but his hard shot went wide. Colts equalised when they attacked determinedly down the right flank. Smillie blocked a long shot from the edge of the circle, but Perrett, following in fast, caught the goalie unawares and poked an easy shot into the net. Colts Ahead. Colts almost immediately added another goal to their total. Smillie came far out to tackle McKibben, who hud brought the ball down with a solo effort, but the Colts’ player eluded him and goaled to put his team in front. Kaipaki made vigorous efforts to draw level. Burrows’s tendency to give “sticks,” however, threw away certain goals, two goals being disallowed because of this breach. The game ended without alteration in the tallies, leaving Colts the winners by tw’o goals to one. Messrs W. F. Bennett and S. Buckland were the umpires. HOLIDAY HOCKEY. WIN FOR OLD BOYS. With Old Technicals unable to field a full team the vacancies were filled by Colts players, and it was a sporting gesture on the part of Old Boys to allow the game to be classed as a competition match. The game was played In a friendly spirit and a bright exhibition of holiday hockey was provided. The teams were on terms at the beginning of the second half, with two goals apiece, but Ross put Old Boys in front with a high shot into goal. Just on the call of time Ewan put Old Boys further ahead with a hard shot into goal, leaving the score: Old Bovs 4, Old Technicals »>.
