Barrell, )t-P. for Hamilton, received from Wellington this morning confirms that the work at the Frankton Junction rallway yards that has been approved by the Department and will cost £IO,OOO is the linal stage of a modernising scheme that has been in hand for thu last three years. The sittings in the depot will he renewed in heavier rails, and their layout will he completely uttered to enablv engine operations to he curried out more quickly. conveniently and economically. Two entrances to the depot will he provided for engines instead of only one as at present, and in addition an independent run—round siding \\'ill be laid to enable engines to gel to and from the turn-table without delay. ‘ Modern coating, ash-handling and sending appllances will be erected and ‘placed in positions which will enable ‘engines to work past the various ser—i\‘iclng points with a continuity which ‘wlll eliminate as far as is practicable tany congestion. . In regard to coalins, a reserve supply of coal will be held at the depot but the actual coating of locomotives {entering and leaving the depot will ‘tm lhy means of an overhead bin feeding Ithe coal to the engines by gravity [Ashes will be handled from the ilSil pit and sand delivered to the sand dryinnr apparatus by means of a power operated grab. It is considered that when the final portion of the main scheme is comlbleted this depot, although not the llfll'EßSi. ,\\‘lll be one of the most emcient and convenient from a staff point ’of view of the railway system.
