Tragedy overtook a party of labourers bound from Te KIWI to Auckland shortly before 11 o’clock on Saturday evening. when, as the result of their oar oopalzlng, two were killed and two others inJured. The party was travelling In torrential rain along the Great South Road when. about a mile north of Ohinewsl. a tyre blew out and the car overturned. The victims were:— Killed. George char-lea Blank. aged 3:9. road contractor of Wairoa Road. Papatoeioe, married, with live children. i Edger Neville Mex-om, aged 3‘2. ‘ labourer, married, of 45 Angiesea. Street, Ponsonby. ‘ Injured. Keith Robert Bremner, a \\i-luwer. \ aged 32, lorry driver, of Urury; severe concussion, bruises, abrasions and shock; condition fairly serious. . llugh l’rince, aged 50. quarry worker, widower, of Te Kawu; injuries to an arm and severe shock; condition not. serious. l The party was being driven to AUCIE gland by Mr Breniner in a three-sealer 1 light roadster with the intention of vis—illlng .\tr Moxsom‘s relatives. All oc—‘cupled the one seat, Mr Prince sitting ‘on Mr Moxsom‘s knee. The car had lahnost reached the end of a stretch of lstruight road north oi“ the Uhinewai ilownship when a tyre burst. The ‘vehicle lurched out of control and ‘skidded before turning round. travelling 1150 feet and capsizing into a depres» ‘sion Mt. deep alongside the road. i All the occupants were pinned under ‘the car. .\lr Blank and Mr .\loxsom ‘were killed instantly. one receiving a ‘ri-actured neck and the other shockllng head injuries. The driver. Mr Bremner, was discovered in the wreck—age in an unconscious condition, while Mr Prince, although receiving slight injuries, sutt’ered severely from shock. He attracted the attention of passing motorists and all were taken by car to a garage at Ohinewai. Later Mr Prince and .\lr Bremner were admitted to the \\'aikalo Hospltal. A St. John ambulance was summoned shortly after 41.30 p.m., and. making an exception—‘ally fast trip from Hamilton to China“at, had the two men removed to the hospital shortly after midnight. The bodies of the two deceased were taken to the morgue in liuntly. Injured Man Recovers. Shortly after the accident Constables \Valton and Craigie. of Huntly, were notified and, with Dr. A. B. Jamieson, oi“ lluntly, attended to the victims before the arrival or the ambulance. They found that Mr Blank and Mr )onsom had been killed almost instantly while .\lr Breniner was in an unconsciOus condition. However. he recovered consciousness in hospital yesterday morning and to—L’lay his condition was regarded as satisfactory. Mr Prince was discharged after treatment. All the occupants of the car were employees. of lhe road contracting ilrln of Messrs \\'. S. Goosnmn and Company. Limited. and were engaged on Work at ’l‘o Kawa. .\lr Blank was well~kno\\n in Papakura, where he is survived by a widow, two sons and three daughters, two of whom are school children. An inquest was opened at Huntly yesterday before Mr F. Harris. coroner, and was adjourned after the hear—ing of formal evidence of identification.
