WAIKATO RACES

SUMMER MEETING OPENED TRIAL TO SWEET ROBE. MODERN MAID’S HURDLE SUCCESS. CHIEF EVENT TO ENGE. The weather was showery for the opening of the Waikato Racing Club’s Summer 'Meeting at Te Rapa to-day. There was a large attendance and the track was heavy following the recent heavy rain. With the large fields engaged, exciting racing was the order of the day. The opening event, the Trial Stakes, resulted in a comfortable victory for the first favourite, Sweet Rose, with Mataru and Full o’ Scotch in the minor places. The hurdle Tace saw a surprise win recorded when the light-weight, Modern Maid, won well, to return a double figure dividend for a win. Soloist and Golden England took second and third money respectively. The two-year-old event was won by Merial from Ned Cuttle and Golden Sheila. The chief event of the card, the Storey Memorial Handicap, w r as won by Enge from Nun Nicer with Prince Colossus third. Following are the results: — TRIAL STAKES. Sweet Rose was at short odds to win the opening event. She was handily placed throughout the running and finishing on solidly at the end came home convincingly. Mataru was also always well In the picture while Full 0’ Scotch ran his best race to date. King Theo and Jan Ridd were the smartest to begin, Jan Rldd leading across the back from Mataru, King Theo, Le Chasseur, Solas, on the outer, Sweet Rose and Ekanui with Libra bringing up the rear. Jan Ridd was still making the pace at the home turn where Mataru was close up in front or Ekanui. Madelon, Le Chasseur, on the rails, Solas. Sweet Rose and Glenacre. In a good finish Sweet Rose came through to win convincingly by three lengths rrom Mataru who beat the Tast finishing Full O’ Scotch by two lengths. There was a surprise in the Frankton Hurdles when the lightweight Modern Maid, after being one of the leaders throughout, stayed on to win nicely. Soloist.. better placed early, may have been 'harder to beat. Golden England -went a good race and other likely improvers are Curlew and Valorftjis. Curlew, Modern Maid, No Fooling and Soloist, went away well, but Curlew had taken command passing the stands where Modern Maid, No Fooling, Race Whip, Valorous, The Hiker, Soloist and Tudor were in that order. Along the back Curlew and Modern Maid were still making the pace from Valorous, who. had Improved his position, The Hiker, No Fooling, Race Whip, Golden England and Soloist. Sweet Lap refused the Tehee at the six Turlong post and crossing the top Valorous had charge from Modern Maid. Golden England. No Fooling, Race Whip, Tudor, Soloist and Curlew. Modern Maid took the lead half-a-mile rrom home and led into the straight from Golden England, Tudor, Valorous, Curlew, No Fooling, Race Whip and Soloist. Modern Maid stayed on to win by three-quarters or a length from Soloist who finished well to heat Golden England by a head. Curlew was fourth followed by No Fooling, Race Whip, Tudor. Winner trained by owner. Te Rapa. Merial, who showed marked promise at her. first start at Matamata recently fin‘lshed on in determined fashion to win the Juvenile event. Ned Cuttle looked llkelv halfway down the runing when he put in his claim but railed to overhaul Merial who revelled in the going. Rulette was first away rrom Palustre. Gay Chief and Surella but the latter had assumed command across the top from Palustre. Chaytor (on the outer), Abbess of Whitby, Phllemup, Rulette and Surview Surella was still In charge at the home turn where Palustre, Chaytor, Phllemup. Ned Cuttle, Rulette and Merial were in that order. In a fine finish Merial did best finishing strongly to beat Ned Cuttle by three-quarters of a length. Golden Sheila was only a neck away from the fast finishing Ned Cuttle and then came Surella, Rulette. Surview. Gay Chief, Chaytor, Quadroon and Palustre. Enge had assumed command across the top rrom Sinking Fund, this pair showing the way here to Prince Colossus, Nun Nicer, Gay Rose, Scotland, Day Wind, Scotch Nation and Tahurangi together, Wait and See, Velocipede and Keith Lu. Enge was still clear at the home turn from Prince Colossus, Nun Nicer, Gay Rose, Sinking Fund and TahurangL Nun Nicer challenged in the straight but failed to catch Enge who won by three-quarters or a length from Nun Nicer who was a jlmilar distance in rront of Prince Colossus. Gay Defence did best of the remainder. « Whirling was the first to show out and led along the back from Bonnie Song, Teak, on the outer, and Mangukaha. Teak hit the front across the top, where Mangukaha, Whirling, Lornacre, Gay Defence, Grateful, Triune and Bcftin'ie Song were in that order. Teak still held charge at tlie home turn from Mangukaha, Lornacre, who ran wide, Gay Defence, Whirling and Grateful. Grateful did best in the run home to win' by a neck from Mangukaha, who beat Gay Defence by two lengths. Teak was fourth with Lornacre, Whirling, Diacquedoon, Triune and Bonnie Song in that order. Inquiries were held into Abbess or Whitby being pulled up in the Juvenile Handicap and Wait and See in the Storey Memorial Handicap, it was found that in both cases the horses got on the legs or horses in rront or them and that both incidents were held to be accidental.
