Silver Ring is to be nominated for autumn events in Sydney, including the w.f.a. races at Randwick. Kicked at the Post. Davolo was badly kicked at the start of his race at Dunedin last Saturday, and it is considered to have affected his chance, as he pulled up very lame. Steeplechaser In Work. According to a Melbourne report, the New Zealander steeplechaser, Membo, has resumed work, after having a spell for several months. Below Her Form. Queen of Song is reported to have been unlucky in the running of her race at Dunedin last Saturday, but the real trouble is that she is sore. Travelling Agent. Travelling Agent has put in an appearance on the tracks at Te Rapa and on Thursday morning was sprinted down the straight. He will be kept going with a to winter racing. Did Well. Aussie Ra has been turned out for a spell. A window full of cups and trophies at New Plymouth during race week was testimony to the success R. Johnson has achieved with Aussie Ra and Davistock. Klnnoull Recovering. The swelling in Kinnoull’s side has subsided considerably, and he looks like making a quick recovery, but his stable-mate. Top Coat, la believed to have broken a small bone in a foreleg, and his racing days may be over. A Prospoot. The four-year-old gelding Careful, by Nigger Minstrel—Look Out, Is being selected as an early winner over hurdles by Taranaki people. He raced well Into third berth to Ruaform and Kaola In Okaiawa Hurdles at the recent Egmont R.C. fixture. Daughter of Gold Money. Gold Money, who was a first-class performer a few years ago, is stated to have a particularly fine fTlly foal by Captain Bunsby. This is her flrst contribution to the turf, and if this youngster has inherited anything like her dam's pare she should also make a name for herself.

Change of Ownership. Prince Reno, formerly with J. ' Butler at Stratford, has been purchased by a patron of J. O’Neill’s stable at New Plymouth. As the report indicates that he Is intended for jumping the purchaser will no doubt transpire as Mr A. Llle, who recently lost Whoa Johnny and Illuminate.

PRINCE ACRE. Prlnoe Aore worked well at looal headquarters on Thursday morning and has apparently benefited from his race at Rotorua. He may be given a start on Monday at Te Rapa In whloh event he will have to be taken Into consideration. Over a mile at Rotorua he was the paoem'aker until his oondltlon gave out.

Lady Kate. Lady Kate, formerly trained at Wlngatui, Is now In P. McGrath’s stable at Riccarton. The Paladin mare won a novice event at Invercargill In very promising style, but that was nearly two years ago, and she has failed to win again In the Interval. Jumping Candidate. Bun Tuck will join the stable of A. E. Ellis as soop a? he is granted his trainer’s license, reports the Star-Sun. He is a well-grown gelding, with the reputation of being able to jump. He Is owned by Mr B. Rutherford, and he will be got ready to race as a steeplechaser. H. Rama’s Team. H. Rama has been for some time at New Brighton, where he has Horowhenua, Free Air, Tooley Street, and Horotiu in work on the beach. They are doing well on this treatment. Their owner-trainer has made no plans for early racing, and his colours may not be out again until Easter. This Is a team that may be at Its best of soft ground in the winter. Blrona. The Gay Shield mare Sirona drew attention to her immediate prospects when in company with Lornaore on Thursday she hit out over six furlongs in 1.22£, which time, under the conditions pertaining, was highly satisfactory. She is looking well and should prove equal to a solid effort when next produced. In Work Again. W. Kemp has recommissioned Captain Bruce, the three-year-old by Captain Bunsby from Lady Bruce, and he will probably be given a race at some of the autumn meetings. He has done well since his return from Australia and has grown into an exceptionally fine-looking colt. Plans For Qalllo. It was not Intended to race Gallio until next spring, and this is now definite. He has a poisoned leg, and while the trouble Is not serious It is Just as well that he has no immediate engagements. If all goes well'with the colt it would not be surprising if he was taken to Australia, for he was entered for the A.J.C. Derby and the V.R.C. Derby. Backed and Beaten. The Karamu-bred two-year-old Patricia Holm, who was purchased by a patron of the stable of E. J. Ellis at Trentham last month, was fancied for her engagements on the second day at Dunedin but although ridden by L. J. Ellis, she finished out of the money. She is a half-sister by Nigger Minstrel to Journet, Golden Chant and Bazaine. She showed pace when trained by W. McKinnon, but gave the impression that she would need a bit of time. Ellis’s stable also had another runner in the race, Lady Bun, by Captain Bunsby from Lady Epsom by Elysian. Lady Bun Is owned by Mr W. S. Clark, breeder and former owner of Synogogue. Brand National Hope. After Belted Hero had outpaced Kellsboro Jack for most of the way and convincingly won the Lonsdale Steeplechase at Hurst Park on December 14 last, a London crltlo commented that it would indeed be a triumph if Lord Penrhyn’s ’chaser went on to Liverpool and won the Grand National, for he is the only steeplechaser in Eric Stedall's team at Lewes, and this very able trainer deserves every credit for the way he has turned out the seven-year-old for his engagements. This gelded son of Herodias has an interesting pedigree. Belted Lady, his dam. never raced, but her dam. Lady Slavey, was a winner over country at Nottingham and Gatwtck. Belted Hero was Belted Lady’s first foal, and was bred by Mr C. M. Fagan, who sold the dam for only 10 guineas. The second foal, also by Herodias. was Diabolo, who was sold for 40 guineas. Belted Hero fTrst saw the racecourse in Ireland, where he won two point-to-point steeplechases at Powerstown Park, over country that takes some jumping. Lord Fingall then raced him for a while, and then sold him to his present owner. He started at Nottingham in December twelve months ago, when he was successful in the Midland Handicap Steeplechase, defeating that good jumper Glenhazel by eight lengths, and also in the Beoher Steeplechase at the Aintree meeting. He is a grand type of horse, and as he stays well he should be a dangerous contender for the Grand National this year. An amusing story 1* going the rounds. A certain young Wellingtonlan chancing to meet a pal who had recently got married asked him Jokingly how he liked matrimony. “I* feel like a bov again,” laughed the newlymade benedict, “ I’m smoking on the sly once more!” Of course there are wives, even now, who don’t smoke and objpct very strongly to their husbands smoking, and it must be confessed that brands of tobacco there are the smoke from which is rank and offensive. Husbands who have to smoke ‘‘on the sly” should change over to "toasted” and they’ll Hud it quite unnecessary to indulge in secret. The smoke from “toasted" is so pure and fragrant that no wife (or indeed anyone else) can reasonably object to it, simply because toasting iargcly frees this beautiful tobacco from nicotine and renders it harmless There’s no “ bite ” in “ toasted.” Ask for (and sec you get) Cut Plug No. to (Bullshead), Navy Gut No. (Bulldog), Cavendish, Biverliead Gold and Desert Gold, and you’ll get the. genuine article—uol some worthless imitatiou. 548.
