COST OF LIVING.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —During the slump the only person who got no attention was the lender. All adjustments made were at his expense, until it looked as if lending money on mortgage was almost an offence. Now we have a new Government, and it looks as though the consumer was going to have a thin time. The price of bread has been fixed, but the price of Hour to the housewife seems certain to go up. It has already been advanced a good deal is some places. I have been told that in these days bread is not the chief food, as it used to be, and that in New Zealand meat and other items take more of the family income, so that the fixing of the price of bread is not of such importance. But Hour is an essential, yet the price is allowed to run free. It seems to me that the Government has stopped too soon. Nothing has been done to increase the incomes of the average family, but the cost of living has been increased.—l am, etc., HOUSEHOLDER. Hamilton, February 19.
