He collected eight off the over, but Read had his revenge by having Mills caught off his last ball at short stop. Wallace started confidently against Parks who was swinging a bit. After five overs a sharp shower sent the players to the pavilion. After ten minutes' respite the batsmen shaped confidently, though Wallace survived an appeal for leg before, and Whitelaw an appeal for a catch behind, both off Read. Whitelaw brought 30 up with a single off Parks and at the same stage. Holmes, the English captain, replaced Read. Griffith missed Whitelaw off Holmes. Wallace then hitting Parks for a crisp three past a single slip fielder. Whitelaw spooned one up off Holmes but Hardstaff could not quite reach the ball. Both batsmen, after some restraint caused by having to get set again after the rain, now settled down and with two fours, one off Sims who replaced Parks at 33 , and the other off Holmes, Wallace brought 50 up .it 12.35 after only 50 minutes at the crease, these boundaries having ma le the brilliant Shield colt 32.
