DUPLICATION IN BUSINESS.

(To the Editor.)' Sir, commercial system to-day presents many difficulties. With the advent of labour-saving devices we are able to increase our output enormously; we ilnd, however, that many firms are engaged in the same business, work the same hour's, advertise extensively, and the result is keen competition, and eventually bad feeling, because one enterprising firm is obtaining more custom, to the detriment of the others. Another factor, is one of cost. Orders are spread and the work is split up till there is nothing left, not even pickings, for the proprietors to live upon. Stalls are depleted and all concerned are in a state of worry, which unfits the business for efficiency. Our leisure time is not our. own, because we are ever thinking out the next day's or next week’s problem. We have recently revived a Chamber of Commerce. Is this another organisation for mutual aid or for obtaining more business? Is it a move for keeping others out? We desire a body of men who will ask questions. Why do we waste so much time in industry? What profit can arise from a more leisured period? What is it that hampers trade or why is business slack? llow can we adjust our business methods so that we can benefit ourselves and the community? What system can we adopt whereby the commercial people will obtain an increase of business and thereby help everyone? Can the social creditor help us? Now, Messrs Hugh Clifford and Hunter. —I am, etc., ENGINEER. Frankton, February 18.
