WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT WAITERIMU-MATAHURU. The first meeting for the year of the Waiterimu-Matahuru W.I. was held in the golf house on February 5, Mrs R. Grundy presiding. The secretary, Mrs Hawken, and Mrs R. Grundy, read through several plays, and it was decided to enter for the drama festival to be held in March at Hamilton. A cake competition was won by Mrs H. Newton. Luncheon was served by the hostesses, Mesdames East and Crosbie, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. AT WHITIKAHU. The February meeting, of the Whitikahu Women’s Institute took the form of a garden party, held in Mrs Clark’s garden. Tauhei Women’s Division members and also district friends were present. . An enjoyable time was spent with clock golf, croquet, and nail driving competitions. Mrs Nalder won the clock golf, Mrs W. Law the croquet, and Mrs Boyce the nail-driving competition. The motto for the month was: “It is great to have a friend to come in, when all the world goes out." A delicious afternoon tea was served by the Institute members. ‘l' NAWTON-ROTOKAURI. The monthly meeting of the New-ton-Rotokauri Women’s Institute was held in the Newton hall on February 12, Mrs Terry presiding. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at Matamata on February 26. Mrs Barrett was appointed delegate to the annual conference of the Waikato Federation. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on March 11 instead of March 4. The winners of the various competitions were as follows:—Flowers, Mrs Terry 1, Mrs Hebditch 2; novelty, Mrs Curtis 1, Mrs Fisher 2; jelly, Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Tombes ‘2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Terry, May, Tombes and Green. IT PIRONOIA. / The 'Pirongia Women's Institute held their first meeting of the new year on Wednesday, when, owing to the absence of Mrs Robson (president). Mrs C. Berry took the chair. After business was concluded, an appeal was read to members from the Waipa County Council, who asked that an effort be made by them (the Pirongia Women‘s Institute) to raise funds for the benefit of the Crippled Children’s Home at Takapuna. It was decided to give the project the support of this institute. Mrs Barry won the points prize, a jug cover. The roll call for the day was “an unusual jam recipe" and many special recipes were brought forth. Two new members were welcomed. The hostesses for the day were Mrs Gordon Bainbridge and Miss Gwen Buchanan. It was decided to have a play-read-ing at the next meeting and Mrs Bainbridge was asked to take charge f this item. AT OHINEWAI. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ohinewai Women's Institute, held in the hall on February 5. ‘ _ The competition for the best pot of apple jelly was won by Mrs Fergus-‘ son 1. Mrs Rennison 2, Miss Higgins 3. The roll call “how I spent Christmas Day,“ proved very interesting. The hostesses were Mrs Beck, Mrs Foster and Mis's Ridgley. A'l' HOROTIU. The February meeting of the Horotiu “'omrn's Institute was held in the Horotiu hull recently, Mrs White presiding over :1 good attendance. i Nominations were called tor officers for the incoming year. AT MANAWARU. Mrs L. Fitzgerald presided at the February meeting of the Manawaru Women‘s Institute. Arrangements were finalised for transport and competitions in connection with the group picnic to be held at Springdale on February 28. It was decided to hold the first annual show of the gardening circle’s exhibits at Manawaru in March. Mesdames Hughes and Waugh were appointed to take charge of the afternoon tea departments and Mrs Faulkner the evening entertainment. A game “wedding presents,” created much amusement, and was a pleasant finale to the afternoon. The hostesses for the occasion were Mesdames Hughes and Hodgson. '
