—+—- I 81'. MARY'S soclE'rv. , —_ \ 1 ANNUAL MEETING HELD. i i I The annual meeting of St. Mary‘s Literary and Debating Society was held in the club rooms last evening. Mr W'. Dwyer presided over a good ‘attendance. . L The annual report showed that a high standard of debating had been maintained during the 1935 season. The society had- been represented at ithe inaugural North Island Catholic lEaster competitions at Masterton and had gained first place in debating, first lin impromptu speech, second in ora—tory, second in religious questions and third in elocution. Teams representing the society had also been successful in two out of three inter-club debates with the Frankton Hibernians’ Society and had defeated an Auckland team. * > Reference was made at the meeting last night to the loss the society had sustained through the transfer to ‘Auckland‘ of Rev. Brother Clemens. president and founder of the society. ‘ New*members were welcomed to tithe society last evening and it is expected that the club will be well represented at the Easter competitions which will he held in Hamilton this year. Arrangements are well in hand for the competitions and it is expected that several North Island Catholic clubs will be represented. The election of officers resulted as. follows—Patron, Rev. Fat-her M. J. Bleakiey; president, Rev. Father F. Walls; vice—presidents, Rev. Father E. Ryan and Messrs M. James and \V. Wynne; hon. secretary, Mr J. F. Grimn, assistant secretary, Mr F. Holden; committee, Messrs H. Knowles Smith, W. Dwyer and J. Lock.
