WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

KAIRANGI AND ROTO-O-RANGI.

The IKalrangi Hall, prettily decora ated, was the scene of gaiety on Wednesday evening, when the ladles of the Kairangi and the Roto-o-Rangl Women’s Institutes -combined to entertain the children of (the district to a fancy dress dance and Christmas tree.

A huge tree, loaded with gifts, occupied the centre of the hall. The proceedings opened with the grand march, following which Santa Claus (Mr Looker) appeared, and the little ones each received gifts and a bag of sweets from the tree. Several delightful items were rendered by the Kairangi Juvenile choir, trained by Mrs Alderman. The songs contributed by Mr H- Wood, of Cambridge, were much enjoyed. Several dances were performed by the children and the ‘beautiful -supper provided was greatly enjoyed. Sincere thanks and appreciation are accorded Mrs Alderman and Mr Hodgson, w'ho provided the music. AT EUREKA. The monthly meeting of the Eureka Women’s Institute was held in the Hall recently a fortnight earlier than usual, owing to the usual date falling too close to Christmas. Mrs Hunter presided over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened the reading of the Greed, after whioh correspondence was dealt with. Mrs Town- 1 send gave a resume of the group meeting held the previous day in Morrinsvllle, for which she was aocorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided tn enter for the drama festival to be held in Hamilton during March. The roll-call, “ Suggestions for -Christmas presents," was very helpful. The competition, “six varieties of tea cakes," was won by Miss Harris, with Mrs- Harington second and Mrs Harris third. The hostesses were Mesdames Ross, Hinton, G. Nixon and J. Young. The meeting -closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The next meeting will not be Held until the last Thursday in January. AT TE HOE. At the recent meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute the roll-call was “ What I Would Like for a Christmas Box," and was well responded to. Owing to leaving the district the president, Mrs Read, tendered her resignation, which was received with regret. A sketching compctitipn w'as won by Mrs Williams. The sales table was w r ell patronised.

AT HOROTIU. The December meeting of the Horotiu Women’s Institute was held in the Horotiu Hall on Friday, Mrs White presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. The afternoon passed very pleasantly with -social items, those contributing to the vPirogramme being:— Miss J. Thompson, pianoforte solo; Miss P. Blake, elocution; Horotiu Womeni-s Institute, ladles, pliayette; Miss D. Robson, novel items; Miss Titmarsh, elocution; Mrs P. Blake, tap dance; Mrs S. Starr, vocal items; Mrs Martin and Miss Starr, vocal duet; carol singing. Much amusement was caused by the exchanging of -Christmas gifts. The hostesses were the Junior members of the Institute. The singing of the National Anthem brought meeting to a closeAT FAIRFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Fairfield Women’s Institute was held, on Wednesday, the vice-president, Mrs Chapman, presiding. There was a fair attendance. The roll-call was “Cold sweets," the written recipe to -be included in the cookery book. Mrs Terry gave a very interesting demonstration of arts and crafts from paper and was accorded a hearty vote -of thanks. The competition, “Best Christmas -gift costing not more than one 'Shilling,” was won by Mrs Freeman; Tile children’s Christmas part}' takes place on Saturday -afternoon’ and promises to be a great success. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Bullock, Patterson and McMiken.

AT TAUPIRI. At the monthly meeting of the Taupirl Women’s Institute held In the Tauplrl ’Hall on Thursday, the president, Mrs L. E. Clarke, presided over a large, attendance of members and visitors. After business was dealt with a most enjoyable and much appreciated programme was given by members of Iho Horotiu Institute. Those who contributed were Mrs Martin and Miss Starr, vocal ducts; and Miss Starr solos. Most interesting demonstrations of beaten brass work and the making of Christmas presents were given by Mesdaines McCarthy and Paddy cif Horotiu. A flower competition was .won by Mrs A. J. Smilh (senior) and Mrs E. A. Bowman (novice). The hoslesses for the day were: — Mcsdames F. A. Wilson, M. E. Fox, G. A. Avery, E. A. Sowman, H. .1. Crampton. Misses J. Sowman, J. Hanley and K. Fulton. School Children’s Treat. The Tauplri Women's Institute, in conjunction with the Taupiri School Committee, held the annual treat for the school children on Wednesday. The day’s enjoyment commenced with races for 111 e children at the park. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the rest of the proceedings were held in the Taupiri Hall, where folk dancing and games were enjoyed. Afternoon tea, and ice cream was provided. During the afternoon the chairman of the .School Committee, Mr G. Pearse, assisted by the secretary, Mr T. Reekie, presented the proficiency, competency and attendance certificates. The singing of the National Anthem brought a memorable day to a close.
