MANY USEFUL ARTICLES.

MADE FROM FLOOR FELT. I wonder how many people have realised the decorative possibilities of floor-felt states a writer in the Manawatu Standard. It can be had in such varied and charming colours, and in the best quality—to be recommended —can be turned into many attractive things, such as table-mats, cushions, Ica-cosies, blotters, table-runners, etc. I made a set of table-mats myself from camel-coloured fell, with wool embroidery, in a conventional design in many colours and gold thread; the plain cut edges done with groups of plain oversewing, about flve sticbes A-in. deep in a group, w’itli about an inch between the groups, not blanketstitched. They arc thick enough to be of real use, and, best of all, will wash, ■soaked and pinned out flat on a board to dry. The embroidery should be very bright. To obtain the best results, use every possible shade of the colours you decide on, the more the better, and every type of wool: Ber- J lin crewel, tapestry, etc. I saw at an exhibition last summer a most beautiful wool rug, the background of which was a soft gold produced by about bO different shades of gold and orange, put in haphazard. A very good imitation of an Indian rug can be made by using cream-coloured felt and working on it a rough design of a Jacobean type in tapestry wool, in green, turquoise, old rose and black. Fringing out the ends makes a good finish. An effective set of cushions and tea cosies for a very picturesque garden room was made of black felt, heavily embroidered with wool in many colours In represent conventional Mowers and grapes, over-sewn round edges with emerald green wool. The felt, is very salisfaelory for' outdoor use, never gelling llalihy or having a chilly effect., hut. it, must, tic the hc.sl, quality and I hero need not he an inch wasted; scraps will make endless small things that will suggest themselves.
