A STRIP OF CHIFFON

FOR EVENING DRESS. (Times Air Mail Service). LONDON, November 27. When an unexpected invitation to a party finds you rather in the doldrums about the little evening dress you feel you have worn so often, see what you can do with a length of chiffon, says the Evening Standard Graceful, A yard and a half will be enough if you are of average height, and it must be chiffon with a crinkle in it, not georgette, because It is to float gracefully, and georgette is not airy enough. For a white sown, choose jade or lacquer-red chiffon; for a green or blue dress, get floral chiffon with the green or blue of the gown somewhere in its patterning. Black chiffon with a glinting gold thread through it would be attractive if the dress is a black one. Double-width chiffon, of course, and slit it down the centre fold, to make two strips each a yard and a half long. One end of each strip may be pointed, or cross-cut, as best pleases you, but the other two ends have to be narrowed off, sloping the chiffon away at each side until the ends are no more than eight inches across. Paste Buttons. If you have time, whip all round the edges. If time is precious, the edges

must be left as cut. Fold the narrow ends very flatly into about half their width (four inches), and sew them as you would a sash to the waist of the dress at the side seams of the bodice. Very flat paste buttons, or slides, may be added to look at though holding the folds of chiffon in place at the waist, but these are not absolutely necessary. Flower to Matoh. Tie the long, floating ends over once, very casually, at the back, letting the tie-over come four or five inches below the xvaist. Fix with an invisible stitch or two, to prevent the tie coming undone, and let the ends just float. A big chiffon, silk, or velvet flower to match this sash-drapery should be worn on the left shoulder to pick up the colour note again, and this simple “brightening-up" process will not only make a little dress look different., it will feel different, and will impart its new’ cheerfulness to you when you wear it.
