BREAKING-UP CEREMONY.

HAMILTON SCHOOL OF ART. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The first annual breaking-up ceremony of the Hamilton School of Art was held -on Thursday evening in the Studio In Ward Street, and was a most successful and pleasant function. There was a good attendance of students and friends. The opening address was given by tile principal, Mrs A. Younghusband, who remarked the need for Art Societies and expressed the hope that in thne New Zealand would become one of the Art Centres of the world. Mrs Younghusband spoke of the -work of the school and its alms and at the conclusion of a most interesting address called upon Mr H. E. Gaze to present the prizes and certificates of merit. Mr Gaze spoke most interestingly on appropriate subjeots and then made the presentations, which were as follows: — Progress marks for first term work: Mrs Poynton, Miss J. Wither. Good progress marks: Miss N. Gaze, Mrs W. Smith, Miss G- Roche, Miss F. Symington, Miss M. Symington, Miss ■Mavis Bogue. Special progress -marks: Mrs A. Warder, Mrs Walker, Mr John Kennedy, Master Ken Pomeroy. Certificate of Merit: Mr Ronald Mutton 1, Mr Henry Martin 2, Miss M. Grlmwood very highly commended. Prize for design: Miss Janet Fuller-ton-Smith. Special prize: Miss Peggy Self. At the -conclusion Mrs A. Warder was the recipient of a presentation from the students upon the termination of her studies at the school, and Mrs A. Younghusband received a presentation from her pupils as a mark of esteem for her untiring interest. . Among those present were:—Mesdames H. E. -Gaze, Ballantine, T. Walker, A.
