MURDER CHARGE

DEATH OF INFANT CHILD. CHINESE WOMAN FOR TRIAL. PLEA OP NOT GUILTY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. The hearing of the charge of murdering ' her infant daughter at Taumarunui on December 2, which was preferred against Olive May Dunn Yow,- a Chinese, aged 27, was completed to-day before Messrs W. Thomas and C. P. Smith, J’s.P., when accused was committed for trial. De-tective-Sergeant J. K. Robertson conducted the case for the police, and accused was represented by Mr G. G. Tong, of Auckland. Wong Shi Chang Wai, fruiterer, under cross-examination said there was no truth whatever in statements that accused’s husband was married to a white girl. Accused was a type of woman who always wanted to be alone, said witness. The meat chopper produced in Court was in accused's room on the day of the tragedy. After the tragedy accused came downstairs crying, and saying her baby girl was dead. Her husband carried her upstairs again and the police were sent for. A Reserved Woman. Nurse Wosch said she attended accused on two occasions in Taumarunui. She was normal and happy then, but was a naturally very reserved woman. Her husband appeared to show her every consideration and kindness. She was unable to speak English. She was entirely dependent on her husband, and witness had never known him to fail her. Margaret Alice Carrington said shortly before the tragedy accused’s husband called at her shop with his small son and bought some cakes for the child. Witness always found accused friendly. She .frequently heard accused crying, but did not think it was crying caused by ill-treatment. Dr. Welby Fisher said the child’s death was caused by hemorrhage following an extensive wound in the neck. While at the scene of the tragedy the impression lie got was that accused was suffering from puerperal insanity.

Constable McLennan said that at the gaol after her arrest accused embraced her husband and was unwilling to be parted from him. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial in the Supreme Court at Hamilton.
