VALUABLE WORK

Last night the personal friends and supporters of Sir Alexander Young gathered to do him honour, and to make some tangible expression of their appreciation of his work during the many years that he was a member of Parliament and of the Ministry. It was a fitting tribute to one who had discharged his onerous duties with credit to himself and to the constituency he represented. Sir Alexander may have political opponents but he has few, if any, personal enemies for, taking his public responsibilities seriously, he let no opportunity pass when he could servo the interests of his electorate. He has enjoyed throughout his public career the respect of all sections of the community, and the demonstration on election night, when he had to admit defeat, was a tribute to his personal popularity. The manner in which he accepted the decision of the electors was typical of the man and in keeping with the standards which lie had set himself to maintain. , ~

The gathering last night would assure Sir Alexander that his friends recognise the worth of his work over many years, and that should he of lasting value to him. Few people could deny that they value the appreciation of those among whom they live, and those who have known Sir Alexander Young long and intimately took the opportunity afforded them to express their appreciation of his public work and of his good services as a citizon. Many throughout a wide district would, we arc sure, wish to be associated with what was said. Political differences fortunately do not necessitate any refusal to admit the good qualities of opponents, and all opposition here had a purely political and in no sense a personal basis. It is to be hoped that, with his ripe experience and wide knowledge of affairs, Sir Alexander will find ways of continuing his work for the community, and meantime he has the pleasure of knowing that what he has been able to do has been fully appreciated.
