WORKS ACCOMPLISHED. REVIEW BY ENGINEER. STREETS AND FOOTPATHS. “By far the most important work carried out in Hie works department lias been the or tensive programme of kerbing and .Manuelling of streets,” said Hie borough engineer, Mr RWorley, in a review submitted to the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday. “During Hie year some 14 miles of kerbing has been completed, the work being carried out in all parts of tiie borough. As funds permit it is proposed lo continue this programme and at the same time follow' up the work by asphalting the carriageways and the footways, nnd it is anticipated that within a few’ years we will possess amenities in this direction unequalled anywhere in the country." The report continued —

The 'laying down of new asphalt footpaths has not been neglected, and several miles of work of this nature has been constructed, as tile following list will show: Palmerston street, Itiver Hoad, Willoughby street, O'Neill Street, Hulumiii Hoad, Kirill Street, Tristram Street, lliuemoa Street, Kent Street, Calloway Street lo Cemetery, Kllis Street (part). Several minor extensions have been found necessary to Hie sewer drainage system to provide facilities for the numerous new' dwellings that have been erected in all parts of the town. The maintenance of the existing assets and facilities has been an unspectacular hut important aspect of tiie council’s activities, and the public can rest assured that the assets have not been allowed to depreciate. In fact, an improvement is always aimed at, and a striking example of this is Hie much-improved surface that has recently been constructed over (lie entire length of tiie business portion of Victoria Street.

The council lias done its very best lo provide suitable works for .Hie relief teams, work which is of value and which would not otherwise be carried out in the normal course of events.
