RELIEF PAYMENTS.

CHARITABLE AID DISTRIBUTION. SOME 110 MEN AFFECTED. About 110 families receiving outdoor charitable relief from the Waikato Hospital Board will participate in the distribution of the Christmas bonus, similar to that provided for the unemployed, to-day. For one or two adults the rate will be £1 each and for each additional member of the family affected by relief 5s will be provided. Distribution commenced this morning and it is expected that the greater part of the bonus will be paid out by to-morrow.

The bonus Is available for those who have been receiving outdoor relief of a regular character in rations, fuel or rent or In cash as the result of old age, sickness, physical infirmity, widowhood, desertion or on account, of . imprisonment of the breadwinner. Men who are graded as class C under the unemployment scheme are considered to fall into one or other of the distress clauses.

In a circular to the hospital boards of tlie Dominion the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. 11. Walt, has stated that it is not intended that those who have ceased to receive outdoor relief should participate in the distribution. Neither are those who have received relief purely of a temporary kind eligible. However, each board is asked to deal with odd cases where exclusion would at present appear to present distinct anomaly and make a somewhat equivalent grant out of their own funds. Payment will be made by the hospital and charitable aid boards out of their own funds and they will subsequently apply for reimbursement by the department.
