WORLD CHESS.

THE NEW CHAMPION. FINE END-GAME PLAYER. The match for the chess championship of the world between Dr. A. Alekhine (holder) and Dr. Max Euwe aroused keen interest in the chess world, says the Manchester Guardian, as Euwe was considered a much mure dangerous challenger than Bogoljubow, who was the 'champion’s opponent in his last two 'Bogoljubow is a combinative player whose style exactly suits Alekhine, while Euwe leans more to the Capablanca school, and is a fine

end-game player. His most important success of recent years are probably his two first prizes at Hastings, in the first of which he finished ahead of Capablanca. He also played well in a short, match against Alekhine in 1927, losing only by the odd game. He trained for the recent matoh with the utmost enthusiasm, and for the last six months had been in constant practioe with Speilmann, Flohr and Kmoch.

Alekhine, on the other hand, did not depart from his ordinary routine. Since his victory over the “ unbeatable ’’ Capablanca in 1927 be had twice defended his title against Bogoljubow, winning on both occasions with the greatest ease and he has been uniformly successful in all the tournaments In which he had taken part.

The conditions were the same as in the two matches with Bogoljubow—--30 games were played, with the condi-

tion that if at the end of these neither player had won six games the match was to continue until one or the other soored this number of victories. The time limit was 45 moves in 21 hours.
