Autopayu Autopay is showing all his old keenness in his work at Trentham, and tjiough he has not yet been galloped he will require a little tuning pp in this respect to he ready for raoing during the holidays. 5 Tudor, It is understood that the Little England gelding Tudor, who won the July Steeplechase at the Wellington winter meeting, will he shipped to Australia to run in the Onkaparlnga Steeplechase. hi- R. By “Martian.”

Is Looking Well. Teak, who won in both starts at the recent Takapuna meeting, is looking a much improved horse as the result of those efforts and he must be considered a strong possibility in the Robinson Handicap at Ellerslie ' next week. He is entered for the Great Northern Derby on the third day of the summer carnival in which it will be interesting to see how he shapes. May Train In France. J. Watts, who trained Call Boy when he won the English Derby in 1927, and who has been acting as assistant trainer to Capt. Percy Whitaker at Newmarket, will probably take charge of M. Marcel Boussac’s horses in France. M. Boussae races extensively both in England and France, and one of his representatives in England is the crack two-year-old colt, Abjer, winner of the Middle Park Stakes.

Consistent Tybalt. That consistent performer Tybalt was only produced onoe at Avondale, winning the Hobson Handicap, run over one mile. The field opposed to him was not a strong one, still he was conceding from 101 b to 241 b to some of the other contestants, and after waiting on the leaders till a furlong from home he went on to win In good -style. Tybalt Is a bit undersized compared with tho majority of our handicap horses, but he is a genuine customer, of whom the best has yet to be seen. When tried over a mile and a half In the Mltchelson Gup last October the Romeo gelding finished very fast over the last couple of furlongs to finish second to Callente, who beat him by less than a length. ■He carried 7.11 on-that ocoaslon, and with 71b less his prospects in the /Auckland Gup cannot be overlooked.

Not Rosy. A -lot has been heard lately about the superior position of racing in Australia compared with New Zealand, yet it was cabled a day or two ago that the old-established Newcastle Jockey Club is going out of existence. Further, the following from the Melbourne Argus last week is instructive: “Many of the smaller country race clubs have found it increasingly difficult to carry on. In the Goulburn Valley fewer horses are in training, and officials of several clubs are apprehensive as to the future. Mr M. 11. Findlay, president of the. North-Eastern Racing Association, stated that many country owners have been atlraoted to the city, and, but for a measure of support from city owners, some country clubs would Cnd It unprofitable to race. Another factor which had affected country racing was that the army of small owners, known as ‘battlers,’ had been practically driven out of racing owing to tile depression.”

Consistent Performer. The historic Town Plate was run at Newmarket (England) on October 9, the distance being four miles. There was nearly a tragedy, as Erain, the favourite, fell, but luckily his rider, Miss G. Carlow, was thrown clear of the other runners. The race was won for the third time in four years by Miss Audrey Dell, riding her father’s horse, Lady Gold. • % j Trip Cancelled. ' ; Paper Slipper’s trip to Eilerslie has 1 been cancelled and he is to be turned out for a spell. For some days past he has been suffering from knee trouble and the hard state of the tracks at Riccarton has intensified the trouble. On Monday when taken to the tracks he was very lame and It was then decided to forego his Auckland holiday engagements.

Lapidary. A horse whose name frequently crops up as a sire of winners is Lapidary'. He was foaled in 1920. and was got by Black Jester (son of Poly-' melus) from Lauda, by Wildfowler (half-brother to Birkenhead) from La Joie, by Ayrshire .(son of Hampton) from Jeannesse, by Scottish,Chief, thesire of Scottish Lassie, the dam of 'Clanrariald. Scottish Lassie was out of Rosette, a half-sister to Bend Or. .
