LABOUR VICTORY

MR BARRELL HONOURED. CELEBRATION AT FRANKTON. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. An enthusiastic reception was accorded Mr C. A. Barrell, M.P. for Hamilton, at a highly successful social and dance tendered him in the Frankton Town Hall last evening to celebrate the Labour Party’s victory at the polls. Old-time and modern dancing and a euchre tournament passed the evening quickly away, music being supplied by the Radio Dance Band. After supper, Mr R. Brooks, president of the Hamilton branch of the Labour Party, congratulated Mr Bar-

rell on his success and handed him a fountain-pen as a token of esteem and respect on behalf of his supporters. He trusted that the gift would serve to commemorate the creation of a- record—the winning of the Hamilton seat for Labour after years of effort. On 'behalf of the Hamilton branch of the Douglas Social Credit Movement, Mr E. M. Masters extended cordial greetings to the new member and presented him with a wallet. He hoped that Mr Barrell would be as successful in his Parliamentary work as he had been in serving on the committee of his organisation. “ After three years we sincerely hope you will be returned with a still greater majority,” he added amid applause. After Mrs Barrell had been presented with a charming bouquet, Mr Barrell rose and said he could hardly find words to express his appreciation of the action of his many friends and supporters in organising the function and speaking of him as they had done. In celebrating their hour of victory, however, he urged them not to forget the pioneers of that great brotherhood, the Labour Party, who fought what looked like a hopeless battle for 20 years.' They were reaping the benefits of their work to-day. “ People to Govern.” " For the first time in 20 years the people are going lo govern this country,” added Mr Barrell. “ Our party is going to carry out the policy it placed before you to the letter. You are asked to co-operate with us in attaining the goal. You can best do that by being lenient In your judgment at the outset. We have to rectify 20 years of bad government and we ■cannot do that in five minutes. Mr Savage has always been a man of the people and you can rest assured that lie will not make a single move to injure the people.” (Applause.) Mr Barrell again expressed appreciation of the goodwill extended to him on all sides by his constituents and for the gifts whioh he would regard as commemorating “the freedom of the people of New Zealand.” Cheers were then enthusiastically given for Mr Barrell and the large crowd joined in singing “ For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” During'the evening songs were contributed by Messrs E. H. Quill, K. P. Fade, W. Trembath, Scrimshaw, and Miss R- Sutherland. Some clever impersonations were given by Miss Sissons. Mr P. Sheehan capably discharged the duties of Master of Ceremonies. Euchre prizes were won by tiie following:—Mrs Knott and Messrs liedgcock, Goodall and J. McDonald.
