BLINDFOLD CHESS.

SIX MATCHES PLAYED. MR C. J. S. PURDY’S DISPLAY. Chess players were given a unique opportunity of witnessing a display of blindfold chess at the Centreway last evening when Mr C. J. S. Purdy, the Australian champion, met six of the local players. Sitting facing the wall with his hack to the boards- he gave a wonderful exhibition of concentration and visualisation by carrying on six games simultaneously in his “minds eye,” and defeating every one of his opponents. AVhen the games were over the champion played through several of the openings again, pointing out to his opponents where they had made their mistakes, and exhibiting a grasp of the game which seemed marvellous to the average player. In the afternoon Mr Purdy played a match against several of Hamilton's leading players in consultation, defeating the combined team in 20 moves. After the game he gave an interesting talk on chess theory, as a result of which the standard of chess in Hamilton should be very much improved. Mr Purdy left for Morrinsvil'e today, where lie will play a simultaneous game to-night. ,
