The tastes of British cinema-goers have been revealed in exceptional fashion by an analysis of the first 10,000 replies received by London Film Productions in answer to their national investigation. To the question whether British films have advanced in the past five years, 99* per cent ansxvered “Yes,” and i per cent said “No.” The six British films which most people have seen are “The Private Life of Henry VIII,” “Catherine the Great,” “I Was a Spy,” “The Iron Duke,” “Jew Suss” and “Nell Gwyn.” The six films which have been best likeckare: “The Private Life of Henry VIII,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “I Was a Spy,” “Man of Aran.” “The Scarlet Pimpernel’’ and “Blossom Time.” A love interest is considered necessary by nearly 89 per cent of the answers. Entertainment, films are preferred by (16 per cent, while 54 per cent like serious productions “with a message.” Such subjects as “The Conquest of the Air” and “Things to Come” interest 80 per,cent. Story Before Playere. The story is, considered more important than the players by more than 70 per cent of tllmgoers. Colour is favoured by 78 per cent. Names of producers are noted by 65 per cent. The, filming of Shakespeare is welcomed by 57 per cent. Modern films are preferred to costume films by a very narrow margin.
