WAIKATO HOSPITAL

IMPORTANT EXTENSIONS. BUILDING LOAN OF £16,160. The AVaikato Hospital Board met yesterday, the chairman, Air J. J. Ryburn, presiding. Also present were:—Mrs G. K. AVilson and Alessrs F. Findlay, E. G. Day, 11. A. Bell, F. Potts, 11. AV. AVilson, A. G. Dent, A. L. Keith, T. Hinton, G. Smith, S. S. Saulbrey, S. C. Alacky, J. Price, \V. R. Lowry and the board’s officers. Air G. Urquhart was granted leave of absence.

Approval of a building subsidy of 10 per cent, on the capital cost of the hoard’s loan of £16,150 for building extensions was received from the Commissioner of Unemployment. It was stated that apart from minor matters to be considered by the Loans Board ihe loan had been authorised for the extensions which comprise diningrooms, kitchen and staff quarters’ block and additions to the Nurses’ Home at the AVaikato Hospital, a new nurses’ home at Malarnata Hospital and additions to the Nurses’. . Home at Rotorua.

The chairman stated that as soon as the matter was finalised by the Loans Board the board’s architects could call for tenders for consideration at the January meeting. Consent was received from the Minister to the expenditure of £335 in providing extra bedrooms for . the nursing staff at the Rotorua Hospital. The Director-General of Health wrote asking the board to reconsider the matter of paying. £55 for furniture for the district, nurse at Rotorua. —'It. was decided by eight votes ,to seven to refer the matter to the new' Alinister of Health and ask for his ruling.

Subject to the approval of the Minister of Health it was decided to grant the Moltai Medical Association £IOO for the 12 months ending December 31, 1936.

Concessions to Dependents. The secretary submitted a schedule showing concessions -granted by hospital boards regarding hospital treatment to staffs and for dependents. It was resolved that in considering the matter of granting free hospital treatment to dependents of members of the board’s staff, that each case he dealt with on its merits. Approval xvas received from the Minister of a renewal for 12 months, commencing December 1, 1935, of a grant to the Huntly Unemployed Workers’ Aledioal Association at Is 3d per member per month. Appointment of Doctor. The Director-General of Health advised that regarding the board’s appointment of Dr. K. Alulcock as medical officer-in-charge of the Rotorua Hospital, the position should bo advertised calling for applications. In reply to a further letter from tho board, the Director-General advised that approval had been granted of exemption from necessity to advertise under the regulations. To Aroha Maternity Hospital. Replying to the board’s request for information in connection with the proposed establishment of a maternity hospital at Te Aroha, the Te Aroha Borough Counoil stated that the population of the -country districts adjacent to Te Aroha was 3488, and the population of r To Aroha township was 2500. There were 120 maternity cases at Te Aroha in the past year, and twm private hospitals operated there. The Piako County Council advised that a committee had been appointed to support the proposal, and asking that arrangements be made for a deputation to meet the board. It was decided to receive a deputation at the January meeting. It was reported that only patients whose husbands are earning £3 per week or less are admitted to ihe hoard’s Waikato- maternity hospital. It was decided to increase tho basis to a maximum of £4 4s per week.

The tenders of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, Ltd., at Hid and llid per lb. were accepted for the supply of butter to the Waikato and Rotorua Hospitals for tho three months commencing January 1, 1936. It was decided to make application for authority to inour an overdraft of £IO,OOO for tho quarter ending March, 31, 1936.
