AIR RAID DEFENCE
CRIV.'CISM BY LABOUR. DID NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION. United Tress Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, August 20. “The Government’s air raid defence measures on July 7 were a lareical gesture that scared the people and did not provide real protection." Mr Reginald Stamp, vice-chairman of the London County Council Fire Brigade, made that statement in the News-Chronicle, voicing the frequent Labour opposition to the scheme. He added: "it is impossible to expect v olunteers successfully to co-operate with firemen and other highly-skilled men, especially when there are probably hundreds of simultaneous fires: " Moreover, gas masks were only available to the rescuers —the firemen and poiice—leaving the populace, who are unable to afford 55s for a mask, defenceless. The Government disregarded the new types of gas that attack the body, and did not provide for the safeguarding of food. “it also failed to provide for the defence of drains, and all the dcconlaminators in the world will not prevent a massacre if tiie main drainage system is blown up, releasing the g«ses."
