A RAPID INCREASE. LATEST STATISTICS. (Omc;ai wneiess.) (Received Aug. 27, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, August 26. The rapid increase in air traffic is shown by the llgures for passengers, freight, mails and mileage provided by Imperial Airways’ services. Comparing the first quarters of this year and last year the passenger ton-miles were 564,835 as against 267,038, freight ton-miles were 127,213 as against 87,811, and mails tonmiles were 269,425, as against 135,056; while the passenger mile total reached 5,884,234, as against 3,830,609. Still more recent statistics, referring to May of this year, show an increase of 70 per cent, compared with the similar period in 1934 in the number of Empire air passengers passing through Hie Croydon airport. During the recent 12 months, for which figures arc available (March 31, 1934, to April 1, 1935), the air liners of Imperial Airways operating on Hie European and Empire routes Hew 2,482,804 miles and carried 55,559 passengers and over 2,000,0001 b. mails and freight.
