New Zealanders Backed. Australian reports show that Pr ncess Doreen and Tauramal were substantially backed in Epsom-Metropoli-tan doubles early this month. Mishap to Red Manfred. ■ Advice received from Melbourne slates that Red Manfred suffered a mishap shortly after arriving there, which necessitated him being eased up in his preparation for two or three weeks. On the Easy List. M. Emanuel’s two-year-olds, Done Flier and Aero Queen, are on the easy list as the result of conIracting slight colds. They had been going very nicely in their work to date. Hat Good Form. Lapel's best race at Rlocarton came in the Heathcote Handicap on the last day, when he finished fourth. Lapel should win an early spring handicap, as his form is good and he is thoroughly seasoned Should Improve. The four-year-old gelding Invoice might be the winner of an early race. He showed pace In the Longbeach Handicap at Rlccarton and will be improved for events ahead.

Costly Raoe for Owners. Although the added money for the Coronation Stakes, the fillies’ three-year-old race at Ascot, won by Ankaret, was only £I6OO, Its total value was £5560, the owners providing the difference In forfeits and sweepstakes.

Sprinting Ability. Hlne Ra, the Iliad —Bonny Dawn three-year-old trained at Rlcoarton by C. Emerson for Mr R. J. Murphy, showed great speed in her races, and at the National meeting ran on a lot better than she did at the Hunt Club fixture. As the season progresses she should develop into a very smart sprinter.

Looks In Good Order. Gay Broney, who was recommissioned recently, Js looking very bright and healthy, though he Is naturally a bit big in condition after his respite. When doing pace work on the sand the other morning he hit out very freely and did not show any signs of the soreness that was so noticeable last season. This gelding comes to hand quickly, and it should not be long before ho is ready to do more strenuous tasks than at present.

For Spring Handicaps. Senior, who is now at Woodvillo under F. Davis, will be one of the contenders for handicap honours early in tlie new season. He will probably make his first appearance at Wanganui. At Riccarton Mr T. 11. Lowry promised the G.J.C. that Senior would be a runner In the New Zealand Cup, while he will no doubt also have a Derby candidate. Expanslvo to Follow. Southdown had two races at the National meeting, lie was too slow on his feet to have any chance. As was the case last yea., lie looks like being an unprofitable horse lo follow, lie gallops well on the track, but apart from his second to Vintage in the Metropolitan Handicap last November he has been disappointing, and that form has done nothing but beep him up in the handicaps and cost in's followers a lot of money.

Horn’s Roof Sold. The four-year-old gelding Horn's Reef, who finished fourth in the llcdeliffs Handicap at Riccarton. was sold after the race by Sir Charles Clifford to Mr W. T. llazlett, and he will Join Mr Hazlett's team in Melbourne. The price was lOOgns. Horn's Reef looks cheap at the price,as he is a promising galloper, and In good condition. Mr Hazlett's ultimate aim with him is the jumping game. Horn’s Reef is by Day Comet from brave Deed, and tie is a half-brother to Zcebrugge and Doiran.

joy Stick Changes Hands. The six-year-old gelding Joy Stick has been disposed of by Mi’s Preston, of Waipawa, to a patron of P. T. Togan’s Timaru 'Stable, lie should not be expensive at the <5 guineas paid, as Ills form has been consistent during the past months, although he did not actually win a race. Sales to India. The sale of Australian racehorses to Indian buyers continues, the latest to go being the six-year-old horse Vauntry. ■ Vauntry proved one of the best two-year-olds of his year, winning a division of the Debutant Stakes at Caulfield and the Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington. At three and four years old he did not quite uphold his early promise, but after being purchased by P. B. Quinlan last season he won two races and was placed in others;

Mated with Bulandshar. The Redfern mare Korokio, owned by Mr W. Jury, who retired from the turf after a series of disappointing performances, is 'to be mated with the Blandford horse Bulandshar. and is to go to Karamu this week. Korokio at her best was a good class galloper, and she won the Oaks in her year, but she never from an Injury received in her box at Llleislie after racing on the first, day of the summer meeting there in her four-year-old season.

Record Taxation Receipts. State finances have benefited since California resumed racing, with the pari-mutuel as a betting medium. A bill to increase the State’s share of the pari-mutuel from 4 per cent to 6 per cent was recently defeated. The money raised from racing will be used by the State for agricultural colleges, Stale and county fairs, and unemployment relief.

Engaged at Taranaki. Tho Te Awamutu-owned three-vear-old Tonnerre has been entered for the hack sprint events at- the Taranaki Hunt meeting, to be held at New Plymouth this week. When raced in juvenile events last season Tonnerre displayed exceptional speed, beating some smart gallopers In the Tuakau Stakes at the Pukekohe meeting, the first race that he contested. Later In Ithe season 'Tonnerre accounted for some well-per-formed two-year-olds Jn the Oakley Handicap at Avondale,' and th'e-first time he repeats that form It will take a first-class hack to lower his colours.

Omaha Easily Beaten. The crack American three-year-old Omaha, owned by Mr William Woodward, and winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, was beaten into third place, ten lengths behind the winner, Discovery, In the Brooklyn Handicap, run at the Aqueduct race track, New York, on June 22 last.
