EVERYMAN’S LIBRARY.

Moderns to be Included. There 3s to be a further Incursion of twentieth-century writers into Everyman’s Library. The batch of six volumes issued in March were: D. H. Lawrence’s “'The White Peacock,” John Galsworthy’s “ The Country House,” Meredith’s “ Ordeal of Richand Feverel,” a collection of "Stories, Essays and Poems," by G. IC. Chesterton, and two two-in-one-volumcs—-Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw" and “The Aspern Papers,” and H. G. Weils’ “The Time Machine” and “ Tito Wheels cf Chance.”

The second instalment of “contemporaries” consists of three very different books. 'One is Hugh Walpole’s a Mr Perrin and Mr Traill.’’ Then we have, in one volume of over 500 pages, “ The Old Wives’ ’Talc." This is generally accepted as Arnold Bennett’s masterpiece, which no doubt accounted for tlie author complaining in his later years that the title had become a nightmare to him. We are proud to issue this important and long novel, complete in one Everyman’s Library volume. The third new volume is Loli’s “ 'lceland Fisherman,” translated by W. P. Baines. Pierre Loti died only twelve years ago, hut his reputation is tlrmly fixed as a major figure in French literature. Tho story of “ Pocheur

d’lslandc" is, like most of Loti’s novels, characterised by an extremely simple plot, marvellous descriptions of Nature in her many moods, and a type of beauty that could only emanate from a strong and sensitive personality. This tenderly painted picture of a Breton fishing village tragedy lias always been Loti’s most popular novel, and it is here offered for the first time in u cheap edition. —“-The Bookmark.”
