LOCAL OBSERVATIONS. Miss R. Budd, of Messrs Balfour, Irvine and Webster, supplies the following local observations on the weather: Barometer. Thursday .... 30.10 Friday 30.20 Thermometer. Max. Min. Wednesday 50 36 Thursday 56 55 Mean Temperature, 55.5 deg. The barometer has risen a little since last reading, and is uteady at 30.20. Indications are for partly fair and partly 'Cloudy weather to-day with mild temperatures; ■westerly winds prevailing. The Rainfall. Rainfall for 24 hours ended 9 o’clook this morning, .02in. Rainfall for previous 24 hours, .20in Total for August to date, 4.11 in. Average rainfall for August, 3.961 n. Rainfall for year to date, 36.37 in. yearly average. 46.32Jn. GOVERNMENT REPORT. The weather report and forecast for New' Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, was as follows: —Pressure is still low to the south and east, but an intense anticyclone extends from eastern Australia on to northern New Zealand. The indications are for westerly winds at first in Cook Strait area, and between Banks Peninsula and East Cape, otherwise southwesterly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and of gale force in exposed positions, but gradually decreasing. Seas rough to high on the west coast of the North Island and on Otago 'coasts, and rather rough elsewhere, but later moderating generally. In the eastern Tasman Sea, fresh to strong south-westerly winds and rough seas. The weather should be mainly fair In eastern districts and south of East 'Cape, but still somewhat changeable generally, with scattered showers. Conditions, however, should gradually improve. Temperatures cold. The Government meteorologist last night issued the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: — Strong south-westerly winds. The weather should he cold and 'Changeable with passing showers, but gradually improving. Seas rough to high on the west coast and moderate on the east coast.
