STREET LIGHTING.

ADDITIONS AUTHORISED. NEED FOR TRIMMING TREES, Various recommendations dealing with street lighting were approved by tho Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The special committee, whose recommendations were adopted considered (lie lighting at the corner of Norton Road and King Street was adequate. It was decided to install an additional light between the corner of Norton Road and the corner -of Devon Road and lo bring all lights up to 100 candle power.

The street light at the corner of Tainui Street and Lake 'Road will be brought up to 100 cjp. The committee was of the opinion that the present lights at Hill Street, Clifton Road and Hardley Street were really close enough together, but the scope of the lights was hindered by the growth of trees. To overcome the defects in the lighting due to shadows cast by trees the committee was of the opinion that at least double the number of lights was necessary in all streets where the trees were allowed to grow higher than 15 feet. Lighting of Railway Crossings. It was resolved to ask the Beautifying Society to take in hand the immediate trimming of all deciduous tTees in the streets to a level that will ensure their not growing heriher than 15 feet before they arc again trimmed. As a further recommendation for Hardley Street and Clifton Road, which have only one bracket light half-way down each street, consideration will he given to replacing these fittings with centre span fittings.

The total cost of the proposed work will he £lB 15s. Mr H. M. Hammond stated that as a member of the Beautifying Society lie deplored Hie necessity of trimming away some of the trees, but it was a work which had to he done on account of the danger through inadequate lighting.

at Frankton, It was deolded to ask the Railway Department whether they will keep tho station lights on a Sunday evening and that, failing the request being granted, that the engineer be authorised' to install additional lighting.
