CRUELTY TO BOBBY CALVES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I find it difficult to refrain from using strong language when referring to lhe above subject.
When 1 lli'st came to New Zealand I was Informed by some English friends who bad preceded me to tho colonies that Hie New Zealanders wore the most cruel lot of people they had over met. I pooh-poohed the idea at first, but am beginning to realise that their remarks were justified, Since the bobby calf business has started I have come to the conclusion that the majority of farmers are absolutely callous to tho sufferings of an animal if If is going to put an extra sixpence into their pockets. There are a few exceptions, i will admit—a few here and there—who are most humane-
Wo know Hie farmer has had a hard run, but l cannot see that he is losing anything by keeping a newlyborn calf for a few days, as the heavier llic calf Ihr more the carrier is likely lo give for H, and also by the calf being stronger, saving il a lot of
misery. J If these were human babies, packed into trucks, unfed and bumped and knocked about, by llic continual movements of the train, what, an outcry there would be, and yet, those poor creatures are babies, and capable ol suffering just, tho same- 1 strongly hold with the idea of fining the carriers. They would soon stop picking up weak, unP.l calves, which at present are taken, only to be trampled on and arriving dead at the works. Hoping to see tilings altered soon,- [ am. etc., FARM HAND. | Tat'ukenga, August 20,
