A mass meeting of seamen at Sydney this afternoon decided to defer further action in regard to the shipping strike until the Union’s Committee of Management, which will meet to-mor-row, can prepare a report. Proceedings to-day were extremely boisterous, resulting in several fights. A section of the men wanted, an extension of the strike, but the moderates gained the day when they overwhelmingly carried the motion to defer action. The climax is likely to be reached to-morrow, when the Federal Executive officers will meet here to adopt a policy for presentation at the oompulsory conference at Melbourne on Wednesday. Four more vessels were Involved in the strike to-day, including the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Kakarilri, which arrived from Tasmania with potatoes and fruit, and three vessels were made idle at Brisbane. The inter-Statc passenger liners Canberra and Westralia have been tied up. Over 30 vessels are now idle as the result of the dispute. It is stated in official circles that the Stale Government make take a hand in the strike by withdrawing Uit dole from unemployed seamen.
