TREATMENT OF CANCER

NEW GERMAN MACHINE. TAKES PLAOE OF RADIUM. MASTERY OF DISEASE ADVANCED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, Aug. 19. The mastery of cancer has been greatly advanced by the new German low-voltage X-ray machine, said Dr. Douglas Thomas, of .Melbourne, after a visit to Germany. The machines, one of which has been forwarded to Melbourne for the use of the Bclhosda Epworth Hospital, do 90 per cent of the work now done by radium. German surgeons, Dr. Thomas stated, are developing a new technique which makes Internal cancers accessible and, as a result, are extending the scope of the machine. “Australians favour radium and will therefore probably strongly oppose the machine, but I am urging that large quantities of radium should not be purchased because 100 cases can be treated in a year with a radium costing £20,000, whereas 100 cases can be treated in a week with a machine which costs £6OO. “ Radium remains important, but only as a supplement to the machine,” the doctor added.
