BEAUTIFUL PERFUMES.

THEIR LANGUAGE AND MEANING. Most women are fond of beautiful perfumes, but If they are wise they will not use any essence Indiscriminately. They should study their personalities and select accordingly, subtly scenting their garments to harmonise with the perfumed powders they use on their skin. A man who 'has spent many years, of his life making and blending flower and spice essences, tells us about the language of perfumes. “Violet,” said he. “is the special scent of youth—fragrant, hopeful, right for the quiet young woman to choose for all occasions. Let her have violet scented baths salts, soaps, and sachets, so that the merest suggestion of. the charming flower is always about her.

“Lilac and lily-of-the-valley are for women just over twenty, belonging particularly to the one with a fair skin. They are cool, placid perfumes, right for the years before life holds many conflicting emotions. “But when romance begins to.colour the days, jasmine and lotus are more suitable, for these are the special perfumes of love. “.Mimosa,' lovely provocative perfume, is for the black-eyed, scarletlipped young woman, full of the joy of life. It will help to bring her success. For her quieter, softer-eyed sister ther is black • narcissus, the haunting fragrance of which has been described as the scent for moonless nights of siars. “The cool fragrance of rose-gardens gathers about altar of roses. Of all scents it is most perfect for the young matron, happy in her home with the husband and children.

“Spice essences are suitable for the years after twenty-five. Elderly women might choose amber as a perfume. As for sandal wood, it is supposed to banish sad memories and strengthen friendship.” A new perfume that was inspired by the scent of wood is to appear this season. Another novelty in perfume is reminiscent of the scent of China tea, but Patou states that flower perfumes—that is, perfumes with a flower-oil basis —will be the most successful.
