Sir, —It is beyond my understanding how your book reviewer could condemn Mr Giuthrie’s fine novel, “The Little Country.” From a recent Nelson’s catalogue 1 see it was one of 12 chosen by the distinguished English writer L. A. G. Strong, for a new series, out_ of thousands of manuscripts submitted to the publishers. There are faults in the book, it Is true; but where English critics give high praise for a New Zealand novel surely our own reviewers can afford to do the same.
