A VICIOUS ATTACK

CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. FIERCE STRUGGLE IN STREET. PEDESTRIAN’S UMBRELLA BROKEN. A savage onslaught made by a young half-caste Maori on Constable J. T. Mills in Victoria Street on Monday had its sequel in the Magistrate’s ■Court, Hamilton, yesterday, when Sidney Bowen was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk and with assaulting the constable. Accused pleaded guilty on both counts. Outlining the circumstances, SeniorSergeant Lambert said the acoused, who was then slightly under the influence of liquor, was spoken to by Sergeant Kelly between 6 o’clock and 7 o’clock on Monday evening in Victoria Street. At 8.50 p.m. Bowen was seen acting in a disorderly manner with another man. Both were lurching about the footpath. When Constable Mills advised him to go home Bowen challenged the constable to put up his fists saying: .“Come on, I’ll give you a go." Constable 'Mills closed with him and a struggle ensued. When on his back in the gutter the accused said: “All right, constable, I’ve had enough.” Hand In His Teeth. “A taxi was then called to take the accused to the police-station and as he was about to get in he gripped the constable’s hand in his teeth, inflicting a nasty wound which had to be medically treated," added the seniorsergeant. “It was only when a pedestrian, Mr IKeenan, broke his umbrella over Bowen’s head that he released his grip.”

In reply to Mr S. L. Paterson S.M., Senior-Sergeant Lambert said tile accused had no money. Bowen was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment on the first charge and to 14 days’ imprisonment on the second count, the terms to be concurrent.
