BRISBANE, July 20

The Maori Rugby team deservedly turned the tables on Queens.and today, winning by 15 points to 13. The victory w r as largely due to the forwards’ excellent efforts, and an outstanding game played by Smith, on the wing. The score indicates the evenness of the play, and it was Brodrick’s try which clinched the match, although the visiters were hard-pressed to keep Queensland out in the dying stages. The Maoris were again well beaten in the scrums, but the forwards were better in all other departments. Harrison and Cooper w r ere in particularly good form with Brodrick and Mataira next.

Smith saved the Maoris time and again by his ruggedness, throwing the Queensland backs off like sacks of chaff. Nepia was brilliant, especially in the final stages. Thu other backs had few chances owing to a lack of the ball on the day. The Maoris have definitely improved and should finish their tour without further defeat.

A Ticklish Situation.

There was another crowd of over 10,000, and perfect.weather prevailed. Suter scored a try for Queensland immediately and Donnely converted. Chase saved a ticklish, situation with a well-judged kick. The Maori forwards went through from a line-out and Rogers ran fast to score. Hemi goaled. '

The Maori backs moved beautifully, and Queensland’s defence was tested. Nepia thrilled the crowd with a beautiful take and, following up, he caught Vincent in possession. Queensland was hard pressed, but was saved by the Maori forwards being off-side. The visitors were continually in Queensland’s half, the forwards playing grandly, with Harrison outstanding. Queensland forced play downfleld, and Donnelly missed a penalty goal. Nepia gathered the ball and gained fifty yards with a great line kick. Vincent then retired injured. The score at haif-lime was 5 all. The Second Half. The Maoris pressed on resumption, but the fullback, Hayes, relieved. Smith stopped a Queensland rush when Lewis looked like scoring. The Maori backs staged a brilliant move along the line to Smith, and the ball came back. again to Phillips, who scored. Hemi goaled. Thrilling football now followed from end to end, the Maoris having the better of the game. Then Bennett started a . Queensland movement in which the whole team joined, and Nicholson scored between the posts. Donnely converted, making the score 10 all.

The Maori forwards started a rush immediately, and Brodrick scored a try between the posts. Hemi converted. Donncly put Queensland within two points by means of a penalty goal from the sideline. Queensland was almost in, but Smith prevented a try. Queensland continued to attack, but Nepia was like a rock on defence. The home team was all over the Maoris in the lasi five minutes, but solid defence kept .them out. Donnely had a chance with a penalty goal from near halfway in Ihc last minute, but missed.
