CRICKET COACH.
POSITION IN CANTERBURY.
\V. E. MERRITT APPOINTED
W. E. Merritt, formerly a Canterbury and New Zealand representative cricketer, and the best slow bowler New Zealand has produced for many years, has been engaged as professional coach to the Canterbury Cricket Association for the coming season.
Slnoe going to England Merritt has been playing in Lancashire league cricket, and has been one of the outstanding players. He holds the league bowling record, which had previously been held by the great player Barnes. Merritt will take up his duties as coach early in October. The appointment will not sever Merritt’s connection with English cricket, which commenced in 1932. He will return to England at tho close of the New Zealand season and resume playing for the Lancashire league.
