HAMILTON WANDERERS’ VICTORY-

With 3. steady rain falling- throughout the afternoon and the field in a ■very sticky condition, there was not much hope” of good football being witnessed at Seddon Park on Saturday when Hamilton Wanderers retained the Ansell 'Cup from a challenge by P.otowaro. There were very few spectators to witness the match, ni which Wanderers, after a somewhat farcical 'cxnibition, defeated their opponents by six goals to' one. Barlow, J. Robinson, Beaumont, E. Crooks, G. Barlow, Berry, D. Crooks, Black. Good work by Caldwell and Crabb look -the play to Rotowaro’s goal near file start, but Donaldson sent the ball over tlie bar. Black made a good retaliatory move but Clarkson opposed him and play returned to neutral territory. McCallum was instrumental in •spoiling Wanderers’ next attack with «i sure kick.

The Scoring Opened

Donaldson and Farr initiated several determined efforts to get past Robinson, but Beaumont and Rutherford defended strongly and frustrated their attacks. Returning the play, Rotowaro looked like opening their account, until Clarkson came across and cleared. A long kick sent play into Rotowaro’s

territory, where McCallum mis-kicked in trying to clear. Rennie centred well to Stewart, who scored easily. Wanderers 1 Rotowaro ........ ...; 0 A short period of scrappy play in midfield followed, but the home team gradually worked past E. The inside left steadied himself, however, and put a well-directed kick past Robinson. Wanderers 4 Rotowaro .. 0 Play liuctuated for a while until EBarlow, G. Barlow and Crooks made an unsuccessful attack. The ground was cutting up badly and playing -conditions were very difficult when (lie half-time whistle blew shortly after. Chances Spoilt

The rain .was -still falling steadily and although Rotowaro attacked time and again the sticky ground in front of the goal spoilt their chances. Berry made a smart movement, only to spoil it with faulty kicking in a handy position. Rotowaro kept the home team on the defence for a long time and were rewarded when E. Crooks made a good run and centred well. Beaumont, who had been working like a Trojan all the time, gathered the pass and smacked the hall into -the net. Rotowaro 1 Wanderers 4

Rotowaro were determined to reduce the deficit but the ground in front of Wanderers’ goal was nothing but a quagmire and the players had their work cut out trying to stand up in it- G. Barlow made a fine solo dash hut Gardiner brought him to a halt. E. Crooks infused a little humour into the game when, finding he could not kick the hall into the net, he pushed it in with his hands. However, he made a very - smart centring shot shortly after, near Raven’s goal, but there was no one. handy to take the pass.

Black and Beaumont were prominent until Wanderers’ forwards set up a combined rush and gained tthe advantage. Rennie took the ball and drove it hard into the net. Wanderers 6 Rotowaro 1
