FRENCH ECONOMIES.
PROTEST DEMONSTRATIONS. SCUFFLES WITH THE POLICE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received July 20, 3 p.m.) PARIS, July 19. Despite the official ban the civil servants were determined to hold a mass demonstration of protest against the reductions in pay, but they were circumvented by 0000 mounted and foot police, who were on duty, and detachments of which repeatedly charged, and arrested 500, restoring order early in the evening without grave incident. The dimensions of the meeting were automatically reduced by locking all the underground railway exits.
The encounters were never more than scuffles, the police buffeting with their gloved hands and the demonstrators retaliating with their lists.
