GANGSTER MURDERED

Louis (“Two-Gun”) Altcrie, one of the few survivors of the prominent gangsters of the prohibition decade, was murdered to-day by gunmen who bad hidden in a building across the street from his home. Since the repeal of prohibition Alterie had been active in the affairs of the powerful union of theatre Janitors and it is believed that a rival gangster killed him in an effort to gain control of the organisation.

It was the daily custom of Mrs Alterie to drive her husband to his office, but to-day she was delayed for a few minutes in the foyer of her apartment building. She heard a hurst of gunfire and hurried out to the street, vyhere she found her husband wounded. He died on the way to hospital, 12 bullets having pierced his body. The police found that a room across the street had been occupied by two men for a fortnight. Apparently they had been keeping watch for an opportune time to kill their victim. A highpowered rifle and a score of discharged cartridges were found. Both men escaped.
