Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, defended the proposed extension of the cattle subsidy and declared that the fall in food prices since 1935 was equivalent to £230,000,000 yearly, benefiting the working class almost exclusively. He urged that a proportion of it should be used to maintain farm wages and produce home foodstuffs. The Bill was read a second time: Ayes 148 Noes 34
