"Tils Majesty, King Alfonso XIII, authorised his son after his marriage to retain personally the rank of Royal Highness and to bear the title of Count of Covadonga. "What has been said about the financial situation of the Count of Covadonga is inexact. Ills Majesty does not allot a monthly allowance of £4O to his son, hut a larger sum which is equivalent to £230 not including doctor’s fees, and so on, or all other extraordinary expenditure which brings his monthly allowance lo a sum much greater than that allowed to his brothers and sisters. "His Majesty has repeatedly invited the Count of Covadonga, particularly during the prolonged absence of the Countess his wife, to go and live with him while retaining the same allowance, but the Count of, Covadonga did not accept this advantageous offer." The Marquis dc Torres de Mendoza points out that this statement of tiiese facts is rendered necessary by cables from New York describing I lie arrival of the Count of Covadonga in New York from Europe to meet his wife, who has been staying with her parents in her unlive Cuba. 'The Count was reported lo have stated that lie still bore the title of Prince of the Asturias, and added “My wife naturally is the Princess.”
