RESERVING OF BOOKS
QUESTION OF EXTRA CHARGE. LIBRARY -COMMITTEE’S VIEW Complaint was made by a Hamiltoi. library subscriber at the annual meeting of subscribers last evening that she had difficulty in securing certain books she wanted unless she paid a booking fee for them. The subscriber objected to paying anything beyond the regular subscription. The matter was later discussed by the committee, and it was pointed out that when a book was in great demand several copies were ordered. Those who were keenly anxious to borrow the book as soon as possible were given an opportunity of booking it for which a fee of 3d was charged when the book was returned, tho next subscriber who had booked it was advised by post card that It was availably and would ‘be held two or three days for him. If the book was not claimed the next subscriber on the list would receive it. It often happened that a book held the popular fancy for only a short time, and the committee had to take care that the library shelves were not -congested with surplus copies of a book that had ceased to be popular. The committee expressed the view that the system in use was the best practicable, and that every effort was being made to serve the interests o! ihe subscribers as a whole.
