HONEY BOARD CHAIRMAN. SOUTHERN PRESS CRITICISM. REPLY BY MR BUTLAND. A trenchant reply to southern criticism regarding the personnel of the honey Industry’s marketing organisation was voiced by Mr J. R. Butland of Auckland, chairman of the New Zealand Honey Control Board at the National Conference of Beekeepers In Hamilton to-day. Mr Butland gave an extract from a leading article which appeared In the Grey River Argus on March 22. Tills stated, lie said, “ The West Coast producers consider that there is altogether too great an interlocking 'of the same interests at the head of the marketing organisation of New Zealand honey, both without and within the Dominion. Has the board chairman no association with the industry other than that position? It would be interesting to know if his firm limits its honey trade solely to the produce of New Zealand Honey Ltd.” “ This is the type of innuendo, fortunately rare in the New Zealand press. It strikes at the heart of public life and keeps many capable men from rendering public service,” declared Mr Rutland. “ The critic endeavours to convey a misleading impression by inference. “ Uninformed Critics.” “ In its application to me personally I am not in the least Interested and it deserves to be mentioned only for the reason that it strikes at the very roots of public life. It has often been said that too few able men offer their services to the country, and this is a fine example of one of the reasons why."
