CHATHAM CUP SERIES.

ELIMINATION GAME PLAYED.

WIN FOR WANDERERS

The great interest taken in the series of games for tile Chatham Cup was well in evidence on Saturday when a fairly large crowd at Soddon Park witnessed an elimination match in the competition for the trophy. The teams engaged were 'Hamilton Wanderers and Claudelands Rovers, and they provided a fast open game, for Wanderers to come out on top by 1 goal to nil. Although Wanderers gained a victory that will ensure them a meeting with the Auokland section winners, they had nothing to spare over their opponents—the teams were very evenly matched. The players lined out as follows: — Wanderers: Raven, Gardiner, Clark, Clarkson, Caldwell, Bullock, Alec. Crabb, Fisher, Donaldson, Stewart, Farr.

Rovers: Schonau, Wright, Don Crabb, Elvey, J. Crabb, Neal, Rogers, Kennedy, Collins, Wallace, Martin. Fluctuating play characterised the game from the very outset and practically every player was kept on the move 'throughout. Early, Wallace took a free in a handy position, but missed, and Wanderers, started by Clark, went away to give 'Don Crabb and Wright a busy time. Kennedy and Rogers made a good run, but the movement collapsed in a handy position.

A smart pass by J. Crabb from halfway helped Rogers on to advantage. A corner taken by Rogers came up well to the goal-mouth, but Wallace sent the ball over the bar. The ball came up fast from half-way shortly after and a melee followed near Wanderers’ goal. Raven was mixed up in it and Collins had an open goalmouth in front of him, but put the ball belling the lino. Shortly after a free kick atvarded to Wanderers gave Stewart an opening and he worked his way to the opposing goal. iSchonau’s defence, however, was too sure and lie made a good clearance. Stewart broko away again and beating Don 1 ' Crabb, gave Schonau another feel of the leather. A smart dash by Collins saw Rovers handy again and the centre forward made 'Raven think qulokly. Wanderers re-arranged their team at this stage and worked up to Rovers’ goal, where Schonau was soon in a light spot when lie collected the ball In tho goal-mouth and had Stewart coming up fast. Half-time blew shortly after with Rovers on attack, and' Clark having a merry time.

Schonau Saves Well.

Early in the second half Rogers had a hard shot at goal, but Raven 'Cleared. Exciting play, took place In Rovers' territory when the ball came aornss the goalmouth from wide out. Fisher sent In a fast low shot and Schonau made a beautiful save when he judged his dlstanoo and dived on to the ball. He was sorely tried a minute later when Alec. Crabb and Stewart made a combined attack.

A long period of mld-flelcl play followed until Rovers broke away and Collins shot hard at goal. Clark came across fast and sent the ball away but Rovers maintained the aggressive until Stewart broke away and transferred to Alec. Crabb. Don Crabb’s solid defence spoilt the movement and Wallace took the play hack to Wanderers’ citadel where lie essayed another shot at goal. Elvey centred the ball immediately after, hut Collins’ shot at goal did not trouble Raven. Fisher was playing a good game in the second half and was a constant source of trouble lo Schonau. Collins and Rogers combined well in a promising movement, hut when their chances looked brightest Martin missed a good scoring opportunity and Rav.en sent the ball out of danger. Wanderers made a couple of determined attacks, but Don Crabb’s confident defence gave them no chance, eventually they got through and Schonau had a very busy time in the face of a hot attack. An exchange of hard kicking followed In midfield with Clarkson playing well. Gardiner repulsed a concerted Rovers attack and Wanderers uarrled on for Fisher to come out prominently again. With only ten minutes to play and neither scoring account ppened the play was very fast, but neither team seemed to make much headway over their opponents. A combined rush In which Stewart and Alec. Crabb featured well gave Schonau another handling of the hall. His defence was as good as ever and

Alec. Crabb’s shot went astray. Wanderers' scoring was opened shortly afterwards when Wallace taokled Donaldson from the raar and Gardiner took the free klok. The ball went right up to the goal and after a brief Interval, in whtoh the ball was headed baok and forth, Donaldson put It over Schonau’s head and into the net.— Wanderers *»>..>*..• 1 Rovers 0 This set-back made Rovers more determined than ever, but they could not seem to cap off any of their movements. Wanderers fought hard to maintain their lead and when the final whistle blew shortly after they were still in Rovers’ territory. The game ended with a score of 1 goal lo nil in Wanderers’ favour. Mr J. Baillle was the referee.
